Countdown to Peace Day
The International Day of Peace will take place in exactly a week’s time, on 21 September. First set up by the UN General Assembly in 1981, in 2001 the assembly resolved that the day would stand as a symbol of non-violence: member states were invited to cease conflict for 24 hours. Last year, 192 UN member states observed the occasion and 28 NGOs were involved in humanitarian actions in 31 countries. Today, Channel 16 brings you images from the Peace Day celebrations in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2009. They serve as a stark reminder that even in areas inevitably bound up with war in the media’s eye, there are those that yearn for peace.
WBRAO (Watch on Basic Rights Afghanistan Organization) and CPD (Cooperation on Peace and Development) will be the organisations responsible for the peace day celebrations this year.
