ACT: This Peace Day, ask prominent Afghan women activists about their experiences

Today is the International Day of Peace: a time when countries all over the world are invited to cease conflict for 24 hours. In honour of this, you are invited to join the No women, no peace. campaign and ask Afghan women’s activists about their experiences living in the midst of conflict. In a few days, we will broadcast their answers in a video interview, which will go some way in portraying the reality for a group commonly sidelined in mainstream discussion of the Afghanistan war.

Amongst those to be interviewed is Wazhma Frogh, who is known for her struggle to advance human rights and improve the status of women in her country. In 2009, she was awarded the International Women of Courage Award. She has also been employed as the Afghanistan Country Director for Global Rights, a body which aims to advocate human rights globally. She writes the Towards the Light blog and has done work in Pakistan to provide support for Afghan refugees.

To hear from Wazhma and others, tweet your questions to @Ch16org on Wednesday 21 September, using the hashtags #AfghanWomen and #PeaceDay. These will then be compiled, and the most common will be passed on to prominent women’s activists in the video interview. If you are not on Twitter, post your questions onto Channel16’s Facebook wall or send them via email to nowomennopeace@gaps-uk.org, with ‘Ask Afghan Women’ in the subject title.
