ACT NOW: Support Egyptian Human Rights Defenders
As Egypt’s Supreme Council of Armed Forces takes harsh steps to curb the actions of pro-democracy demonstrators, the relative unity of the 11 February Revolution appears to be under serious threat. On 17 December, reports circulated of the military’s vicious attacks on many Egyptian women protesters. Since February, almost 12,000 people have faced rulings in military trials that are incompatible with the freedoms outlined in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (of which Egypt is a signatory).
Faced with these challenges to the democratic impetus of the February Revolution, the site Meanwhile in Egypt has been established to bring together the views of activists fresh from Tahrir Square. It serves as an arena to publicise the issues that are most important to Egyptian civil society.
Join Meanwhile in Egypt’s action to defend human rights. Sign this petition against the use of military trials, or send a Tweet in support of the Egyptian Human Rights Defenders that makes use of the hashtag #nomiltrials and the link bit.ly/isupporttahrir.
