The best and most under-utilized resource in Afghanistan, a resource that could be instrumental for successful peace, a successful, stable country in the future, is the women [of] Afghanistan.

Afghan women have the right, the capacity, and the desire to be involved in transition, peace process, and creating Afghanistan’s future. This paper is an attempt to craft solutions for the current challenges in Afghanistan if the women are directly included and part of the national and sub-national processes.

Drought conditions tipped vulnerable people into the shocking predicament the world has witnessed over the past few months, forcing them to leave the meagre comfort of their homes to search for help and to face the awful choice of leaving weaker children behind to save the stronger ones. But the reasons that no assistance was to hand were political rather than climatic.

The Afghan Women’s Writing Project was set up in 2008 at the initiation of the novelist, Masha Hamilton, who wanted to provide the inspiring Afghan women that she knew with a forum to share their stories. This arena, unbiased by the media or the influence of male relatives, allows these women to assert their voices, even if they often have to do so secretly and without the knowledge of their families. To mark the launch of Channel 16’s multi-partner ‘Green Scarves for Solidarity’ campaign, we will be featuring an AWWP story each week until the end of October.
