Education & Conflict
Going to school is something some people take for granted but in many parts of the world it’s a luxury that millions of children won’t enjoy. Throughout the world 75 million children are out of school and more than half of those live in conflict affected countries. Receiving an education is a right to which every child on the planet is entitled. But war and conflict often tear children away from school at a time when they need its safety and protection the most.
Conflict destroys schools, kills or displaces students and teachers, forces children to work or stay at home to care for siblings, and sometimes enlists children into the fighting itself. Yet education is one of the best tools for preventing conflict, halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and improving economic livelihoods. The future of communities and entire countries is jeopardised when war denies millions of children their right to go to school.
