This ia an inspiring story. She is a role model many women should emulate. Leardership is about sacrifice and service, which she has expressed. She challenges the notion that only those with a male voice should lead. This information needs to get availed to everyone.

Great story, reminds me of Uganda where we leave greatly in denial on the extent of FGM. Leaders paint a good picture, but on the ground men will tell you they cant get married to an uncircumcised woman because culturally they believe uncircumcised women cheat on their spouses

Strong piece, very touching. Just one minor (and possibly a bit nit-picking) objection. I’m
not an Islam expert, but I always thought that “Islam”, or at least (Holy) Quran, does not literally impose on muslim women
to wear a Hijab. As the author rightly explains, Islam - or rather:
some conservative Islamic scholars on the basis of Quran and Hadithe, request them to
hide their “beauties”, which is commonly interpreted as a dress, which covers
‘only’ arms, legs, chest and hair. However, to my knowledge, there are also more
liberal interpretations of Islamic rules of conduct (also in Afghanistan), which
do not see the Hijab as the only tolerable garment for muslim women, but also tolerate
for example a loosely wrapped scarve which may even leave some hair uncovered – as,
by the way, can also be seen on many portraits, displayed here in the “Green
Scarves” gallery on Channel 16! However, maybe the Hijab can be considered the lesser evil than the Burqa...

It really touched the heart and I admire the love of the son towards his mother because men in Afghanistan often make fun of women wearing burqa.

Burqa is not protection; by wearing it you become more vulnerable, because you can't see properly and you feel separated from the community.

We want to do proper hijab but not burqa

I think the burqa is degrading for women and should be banned by the United Nations. Women can still dress modestly if they wish, without having to wear the burqa.
Susan.

But this likely to continue, (i mean repression and it's effects, for as long as there is harmony and understanding among leaders. Following 2011 fracas, there is likely to be even worse situations, now that the populations are reopening their eyes

Thank you for your story. There is a quote from a general after the 1st World War, "You cannot rouse the animal in man then expect it to be put aside at a moment's notice".

A key element in restoring order to armed and recently bloodied forces is accountability. Those that attacked you or even those that stood by watching must be tracked down and publicly punished (within reason) so that they and others know they cannot get away with such actions.

Failure to control the security forces results in endless repeats of violence as has been seen in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

So what is the meaning of liberation? It's a pity the army did that, even without police's orders. So does the country have a police? i wonder for how long the "new country" is going to be run with such behavior. A friend working in Sudan tells me that natives of Sudan have and don't care attitude. I think they need to go through some psychological mentoring. Thanks for posting and sharing this.
