Dear Raid
Thanks for your comments, it is encouraging to find people who care about our problems. I agree with you is that women's right are really human rights, but it is not universal concept. Look at the debate on USA about gay marriage whether it is a human right or not. This proves that the human rights in USA are not yet completely defined and it will be always modified according to local parameters. My self I like the way of loyalty and obedience of Japanese woman to her husband. Should we inforce them of Western values of dry equality of man and women while they found happiness in their system.
Iam talking about why not taking the best of westeren human rights and mix it with the best of our values

I'm a Westerner, so I hope my comment is not unwelcome. But I would say that to connect "women's rights" to Western culture seems an indirect way of condemning the concept and avoiding the issue.

Women's rights are really human rights - and that is not a Western concept, but a universal one.

Dear Reem
you know very well that education and job are now accepted by most of Sudanese families.
As an eastern man when I hear the word "women's rights" , the decadent western soccieties jumps to my head.
Why not we redefine "women's rights" again according to our values, culture and taste, creating a homogenuous harmonized symbole accepted by our socciety. Not the monester rights of Western socciety

Dear Khalid,

No one said that "women's rights" have one definition. The most important thing is for women to have a choice in everything from access to education to getting a job.

Dear Reem and Carolyne
What are the woman rights, and by whome it had been defined, and why should I accept definetions of westeren society that are able to destroy my family. Should we accept gay marriage eg. on our society as a right?
There is nothing as absolute freedom in this world. But why not an organized freedom.
Woman right on my point of view is to be safe and feel safe and to be loved by a protective sacrificing loving huspand with mutual loyality and understanding and a happy family democracy.

Thanks for your comment Carolyne. I agree with you and I tried to bring light to this issue in my piece. I noticed that not all male activists are for women's rights or they are not priorities to them. As much as our fight is a national struggle for peace, democracy and rights in Sudan, we should always bring up the issues that affect us as women because if we don't, we will be harassed out of the decision-making sphere

The issues that concern women in Africa in particular are normally taken lightly. I have been in meetings with male collegeus and as soon as an issue uniquelly concerns women it it treated with contempt and dealt with haphazardly so that they skip to a 'more' important issue. Issues of rape for example have not been taken care of to the core. there are no proper laws against such vices and domestic violence and other kinds of abuses are looked as normal in the African society.

The culture in Africa in my opinion is to a biggest extent a contributory factor to the escalation of such vices as argued somewhere in the piece above. A woman is beaten the previous night and the following morning she wakes up and goes about her business as if nothing happens. In many cases such women will even defend their husbands and try to cover up for them. In most African societies it is not lady like to speak up against certain issues especially violence against women.

The governments in Africa and activists have a long way to go in fight violence against women and changing attitude against issues concerning women.

The pedagogy of the oppressed, animated by authentic, humanist (not humanitarian) generosity, presents itself as a pedagogy of humankind. Pedagogy which begins with the egoistic interests of the oppressors (an egoism cloaked in the false generosity of paternalism) and makes of the oppressed the objects of its humanitarianism, itself maintains and embodies oppression. It is an instrument of dehumanization. This is why, as we affirmed earlier, the pedagogy of the oppressed cannot be developed or practiced by the oppressors. It would be a contradiction in terms if the oppressors not only defended but actually implemented a liberating education.
- Paulo Friere, PEDAGOGY OF THE OPPRESSED

A movement in the making

Indeed, the self-made concept is working. Before they even staged
their first visible campaign, the movement has already raised sufficient
private funding to continue their activities well into the year. Future
campaigns will deal with education and infrastructure, in the hopes to
mobilize more and more youth, their families, and the community as a
whole.

For now, it’s all about awareness raising. “The authorities are so
used to not listening, to doing nothing – if we can get them to pay
attention, to start holding emergency meetings, that’s already a start.”

Very informative. I suppose one cold say that it is left tp the reader to make their own conclusions as to just how much is really being done? On the one hand the article states that Lt-Col Golam Faruque says that "If anyone says MONUSCO is not doing enough to protect civilians [from the LRA], they don’t know the reality.”. And on the other hand the story opens up with an almost comical picture of Congolese soldiers relaxing under a mango tree in the noon day sun (I can almost touch that image) drinking frosties with a bunch of empties laying on the ground beside their dusty rifles, with five bulltets. With that senario, I'm left to believe that there is little in the way of a coordinated effort in the region. You would think that the soldeirs would at least have enough bullets to defend the village and themselves.
