Somalia
Somalia has been without an effective national government for almost twenty years. Conflict and drought has produced a massive exodus of refugees with close to half of the population displaced within the country. The Western media’s attention on piracy, arms trade and Somalia as an al-Qaeda breeding ground has overshadowed the needs of the people. Several hundred innocent men, women, and children in Mogadishu have been killed or wounded by indiscriminate shelling from all the warring groups. One in five children under the age of five is malnourished. Journalists, human rights activists and aid workers are regularly targeted, tortured and killed.
Amid all the dehumanising messages and grave statistics, Somalia is home to Nobel Prize winners and Nobel-prize nominees: Asha Haji and Nuruddin Farah, and an eminent environmentalist, Fatima Jibrell. People inside the country are making incredible efforts under extreme circumstance to sustain hope and find credible solutions.
